Gordon Roger Alexander Buchanan Parks is an American photographer, songwriter, writer and filmmaker. Parks was the first African American to produce and direct major movies - developing films that document the experience of fighting black slaves and black Americans, while also creating a "blaxploitation" genre. He is best remembered for his iconic photographs of poor Americans in the 1940s, for his photographic essays for Life magazine, and as the director of the 1971 film Shaft. Parks is also an author, poet and composer.
