Gordon Roger Alexander Buchanan Parks is an American photographer, songwriter, writer and filmmaker. Parks was the first African American to produce and direct major movies - developing films that document the experience of fighting black slaves and black Americans, while also creating a "blaxploitation" genre. He is best remembered for his iconic photographs of poor Americans in the 1940s, for his photographic essays for Life magazine, and as the director of the 1971 film Shaft.
